BREVILLE / SAGE BARISTA TOUCH BES880

Replace the milk-sensor wire and align the jug sensor pads on the Barista Touch BES880.

Use this walkthrough for an ER05 milk-sensor fault or repeated “place milk jug” prompt. Check the wiring and pad alignment if ER07 or ER08 appears after reassembly.

What this covers

  • ER05 milk-sensor error
  • Jug not detected or repeated “place milk jug” prompt
  • Wire routing and connector checks for ER07 or ER08 after repair

At a glance

Barista Touch BES880. Allow about 15 minutes, or longer for your first repair. Confirm the replacement wire and repair kit match your machine.

Before you start

  • Switch the machine off, unplug it and allow it to cool before opening any cover.
  • Remove the water tank, bean hopper and drip tray before turning the machine to access its underside. Support it securely on the work surface.
  • Photograph the sensor board and cable routing before disconnecting anything. Grip connectors by their housings, not their wires.
  • Keep the machine unplugged until the sensor cover, side and bottom panels, and all screws are refitted. If you are unsure around internal wiring, use a qualified technician.

Tools and supplies

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • T20 Torx driver

1. Prepare the machine and open the base

Set aside the water tank, bean hopper and drip tray before accessing the underside.

  1. Remove loose accessories

Unplug the machine, let it cool, then remove the water tank, bean hopper and drip tray. Support the machine securely while working underneath.

  2. Undo the five base screws

Remove the five numbered Phillips screws underneath the machine to release the side and bottom panels.

  3. Expose the milk sensor board

Lift off the released side and bottom panels to reach the milk sensor board. Keep the screws and panels together for reassembly.

2. Release the sensor assembly

Photograph the board, connector and wire path before moving them.

  1. Remove the board screws

Remove the four numbered screws holding the milk sensor board.

  2. Lift off the sensor cover

Lift the sensor cover away to expose the assembly.

  3. Remove the boot and spring

Remove the rubber boot and spring, keeping them in their removal order for refitting.

  4. Unclip the board cable

Unclip the sensor cable from the board by the plug housing so the board can be released.

3. Replace and route the sensor wire

Follow the path of the original wire and keep the contact pads aligned.

  1. Thread the replacement wire

Remove the damaged sensor wire and route the replacement through the same path.

Use a small screwdriver or pick to guide the new wire through the holder without damaging the leads.

  2. Align the jug sensor pads

Centre all three jug sensor pads over their matching contacts before tightening the board screws.

Take care: Misaligned pads can cause the machine to keep asking for the milk jug. Seat the board, check alignment, then tighten gently.

  3. Keep the leads untwisted

Route the new wire without twisting the fine leads, making sharp bends or leaving it where a cover can pinch it.

If ER07 or ER08 appears after assembly, recheck this routing and the board connector with the machine unplugged.

4. Reassemble and check jug detection

Return the board, spring, boot and all panels before applying power.

  1. Secure the sensor board

Hold the triangular locator in place while refitting the sensor board screws.

Check that the three jug sensor pads remain centred as you secure the board.

  2. Refit the front sensor assembly

Reinstall the spring and rubber boot, then seat the sensor cover in the front opening.
Hands pressing the sensor fitting back into the front opening beside the steam wand.
  3. Close the machine before testing

Refit the remaining side and bottom panels and the five base screws. Return the water tank, bean hopper and drip tray. Only then reconnect power and check that the machine detects a jug normally.

If the error remains

ER05 or a continued “place milk jug” prompt: switch off and unplug, then recheck the board cable and the alignment of all three jug sensor pads. A technician can check wire continuity if the fault persists.

ER07 or ER08 after reassembly: with the machine unplugged, check that the new lead is untwisted, not pinched by a cover, and fully connected to the board.

Jug still not detected: with power disconnected, loosen the board screws, re-centre the pads and retighten evenly. If the fault remains, seek service.

Final check

  • The replacement wire follows the original path without twisted, sharply bent or pinched leads.
  • The cable plug is fully seated in the milk sensor board.
  • All three jug sensor pads are centred on their matching contacts.
  • The spring, rubber boot, sensor cover, side and bottom panels, and every removed screw are back in place.
  • The water tank, bean hopper and drip tray are installed before power is restored.
  • On a normal check, the machine detects the milk jug without the original error.
